Case Study: Post-Motor Vehicle Accident Recovery

As the treating practitioner, I first assessed this young male patient following a pedestrian motor vehicle accident in which he was struck by a vehicle and experienced a brief loss of consciousness at the scene. In the days following the incident, he developed a constellation of symptoms commonly seen after traumatic brain injury and post-concussive syndrome, including persistent headaches, dizziness, impaired balance, speech difficulties, neck stiffness, cognitive slowing, and lower back discomfort.
During the initial assessment, the patient demonstrated noticeable instability while walking, reduced tolerance for single-leg standing, restricted cervical range of motion, and postural asymmetry involving the head, neck, and upper body. His speech was slower and less fluid than normal, and he reported increased mental fatigue during conversation and daily activities. Additional symptoms included dry eyes, sensitivity to light, and difficulty concentrating, all of which significantly affected his quality of life and confidence in returning to normal routines.
Based on my clinical findings, I developed a treatment plan focused on neurological recovery, regulation of the nervous system, restoration of balance and coordination, reduction of musculoskeletal tension, and improvement of circulation to support the body's natural healing process. Treatment primarily involved acupuncture combined with soft tissue therapy and functional rehabilitation strategies tailored to the patient's evolving presentation.
Following the third treatment, the patient reported significant improvement in both the frequency and intensity of his headaches and dizziness. His balance had begun to recover, and he felt more stable during standing and walking activities. Family members also noticed that his speech had become smoother and more natural. Neck stiffness decreased substantially, and cervical mobility improved, allowing him to move with greater comfort throughout the day.
By the fifth treatment, his recovery had accelerated considerably. His gait became noticeably more stable, and his single-leg standing time increased, indicating meaningful improvement in balance and neuromuscular control. Lower back pain was greatly reduced, and his posture improved as spinal mobility returned. Head movement became easier and more coordinated, while cognitive responses became quicker and more consistent. Speech fluency continued to improve, with fewer pauses and less effort required during conversation. In addition, symptoms of dry eyes and photophobia gradually subsided, suggesting ongoing recovery of neurological function.
As treatment progressed, improvements extended beyond symptom reduction and into overall functional performance. The patient reported greater physical confidence, improved endurance during daily activities, and better coordination during movement. His posture became more symmetrical, movement patterns normalized, and he demonstrated increased control during balance testing and functional assessments.
After completing twelve treatments, the patient reported that the flexibility and mobility of his back and waist had improved beyond his pre-accident baseline. His speech difficulties had almost completely resolved, and cognitive processing speed had returned to near normal levels. Balance, coordination, posture, and walking stability all continued to improve, allowing him to resume many aspects of daily life with confidence and independence.
In my clinical experience, recovery following motor vehicle accidents often extends beyond musculoskeletal injuries alone. Neurological symptoms such as dizziness, cognitive slowing, speech disturbances, and balance dysfunction can persist long after the initial trauma if left unaddressed. Early intervention and a comprehensive rehabilitation approach can play an important role in supporting neurological recovery and improving long-term outcomes.
